The Germany-based company, Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) has agreed a six-year contract with two international airports in Dubai.

The deal will see the firm be responsible for baggage and material handling at the airports and is based on key performance indicators (KPIs) which work together with airline operator Dubai Airports.

A press release confirmed that Siemens will look after and manage the recently extended baggage handling system at the new Dubai World Central (DWC) airport, as well as Terminals 1, 2 and 3 at Dubai International.

“More and more airports are switching from traditional service methods to more modern models,” said Michael Reichle, CEO of SPPAL.

“We support customers by providing condition-based and predictive maintenance, for example, or – as is the case in Dubai – by providing KPI-based solutions and innovative digital analytics applications. By doing so, further improvement in system availability as well as cost and resource efficiency is achieved.”

Dubai International is widely considered as one of the world’s leading airports and serves over 90mn passengers per year and DWC currently caters to 26mn with a goal of eventually reaching 240mn a year through expansion.
