70 New Smart Factories for Shanghai in Manufacturing Boost

Shanghai's Manufacturing Success to See 70 Smart Factories Built, Which Has Been Called an ‘Inevitable Choice’ for the Digital Transformation of the Sector

Shanghai’s intelligent manufacturing equipment sector has plans for building 70 smart factories in 2024, after the industry surpassed US$14.09bn.

Shanghai is the world’s manufacturing hotspot

28.7% of the world’s manufacturing happens in China and the coastal city of Shanghai is its biggest hub. The city is home to 25m people, who persevered during the city-wide lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now, 2,000 container ships leave the port every month, selling products from Apple and ABB to Baosteel Group and Bright Food. Check out our ‘Top 10 manufacturing hubs based in Shanghai’ here

"It is an inevitable choice for megacities like Shanghai to take smart factories as a key area for the digital transformation of the manufacturing sector and to accelerate the construction of smart factories," said Chen Jie, Vice-Mayor of Shanghai.

According to a conference on expanding Shanghai’s smart factories, manufacturers in the city have recently seen:

  • An average 50% surge in production efficiency
  • 30% reduction in operating costs
  • 13.8% decrease in unit energy consumption.

As a result, Shanghai will now oversee the construction of 70 more smart factories across the city. These factories will manufacture items used in the automobile sector, as well as high-end equipment and electronics.

Shanghai's blueprint for advanced manufacturing thrills industrial leaders

China’s manufacturing leaders are excited to see how this ambitious plan develops.

"By laying out detailed plans for advanced manufacturing and modern services, Shanghai looks to strengthen in-depth integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, promote a new model of industrialisation and the high-quality development of key industrial chains, thereby serving as a role model for a modern industrial system led by technological innovation," said Qian Feng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

"Shanghai has so far built 19 national-level smart factories, 100 municipal-level smart factories and more than 1,000 intelligent manufacturing applications,” said Zhang Ying, Director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatisation. “More than 70% of the city's industrial enterprises above the designated size, or with an annual revenue of US$2.79m or above each, have conducted intelligent factory evaluation."
