German chemical giant BASF has announced the signing of a contract with French firm Lactips to market their biodegradable materials.

The exclusive contract will see BASF leverage Lactips’ water-soluble, bio-based and fully biodegradable materials to help replace the polyvinyl alcohol films in items such as dishwasher tabs. BASF says the material has applications in the homecare as well as industrial and institutional cleaning realms.

Robert Parker, Director of New Business Development at Care Chemicals, BASF, said: “Sustainability plays a major role in all of our business processes. Lactips’ solution for films for dishwasher tabs supplements our existing portfolio of sustainable offerings. It allows us to provide our customers with a broad portfolio of bio-degradable products for the home care industry.”

Lactips’ film material technology is based on technical casein obtained from the excess of milk protein production. Its CEO, Marie-Hélène Gramatikoff, said “Lactips is proud to have its technology marketed by a leading global partner with a strong network.” She continued, “we will benefit from BASF’s experience and latest developments in the home care industry.”

BASF says the partnership will support their wider strategy of pursuing sustainable solutions to drive growth.
