Jaguar Land Rover unveils new windshield display technology

New windshield technology could make the Range Rover Evoque much safer.

British automaker Jaguar Land Rover is due to unveil its new windshield technology at the Paris Motor Show this month. The new technology projects information onto the drivers’ windshield.

Industry-first HUD technology will project sharp, high-contrast images into the drivers’ line of sight, “safely and intuitively conveying vital vehicle, road and navigation information,” said the company. The HUD system will initially be available with the Evoque, but will be rolled out to other models in time.

The new HUD technology will give drivers information such as speed, selected gear, navigation, entertainment and traffic information. It will also display any vehicle warning notifications, cruise control settings and more.

HUD type systems were originally invented for combat aircraft and were designed to provide the pilot with all essential information for the flight, without having to take his eyes off the target.

According to the company, the new system will increase safety, as drivers will not need to take their eyes off the road to receive vital information.

“Jaguar Land Rover's HUD system is an innovative driver information tool, which really pushes the boundaries of advanced laser projection technology. It borrows from military technology - which, until now, has been unheard of in the automotive industry.

“Land Rover is committed to preventing the risk of accidents by reducing driver distraction. By presenting key driver information in this way and removing the need for the driver to look away from the road ahead, HUD is an important step on the journey to delivering Land Rover's vision of the intelligent car of the future,” said Murray Dietsch, Land Rover Programs Director.
