The UK government are planning to use offsite construction methods as part of the £600bn ($765bn) worth of infrastructure projects planned over the next ten years, according to The Manufacturer.

It is hoped that the funds will allow the infrastructure projects to be delivered through the use of digital manufacturing techniques.

The government stated: “Applying modern manufacturing approaches to building projects can boost productivity and reduce waste by as much as 90%. For example, a school that typically takes a year to build could be completed in just over four months.”

It is anticipated that one of the projects planned over the next decade will include flood alleviation schemes in Southsea and Oxford.

The government has published details of a proposal for its preferred approach to build infrastructure named a Platform Approach to Design for Manufacture and Assembly, in addition, to the plans to utilise the modern manufacturing technique where manufacturing building and infrastructure are developed before being sent for assembly on construction sites.
