The Japan-based automotive manufacturer, Nissan, has agreed a preliminary deal with Ghana to set up an assembly plant in the country, according to Reuters.

With the company already holding a 32% market share in the country, Nissan aims to make Ghana its sales hub in West Africa, despite already operating a facility in Nigeria.

Speaking after signing a memorandum of understanding with Ghana’s trade ministry, Mike Whitfield, Nissan’s managing director for Africa, said: “We see Ghana as the gateway to West Africa. We will grow our business presence in the region and it’s for the long term.”

It is thought that the company’s plans are subject to a national auto policy that the government are anticipated to launch by the end of 2018.

According to Graphic Online, speaking to local and international media, President Akufo-Addo said: “There are so many areas that our bilateral relationship has offered us, but the key part of it for me is the emphasis on investment and trade corporation.”

It has also been revealed that German firm Volkswagen and China-based Sinotruk has also agreed preliminary deals to create plants in Ghana.
