The Australian Research Council (ARC) has launched a new training centre in the Queensland University of Technology.

The ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre in Additive Biomanufacturing will research the manufacturing of medical devices and implants in order to develop new technologies and materials.

The facility has been split into three programs: Technology, Materials, and Clinical Translation.

The Technology department will focus on throughput additive biomanufacturing platforms, whilst Materials will work on the development, characterisation, and up-scaling of bioinks, and Clinical Translation will channel innovative approaches to clinical applications.

“ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres involve collaboration between leading university-based researchers with end-users to create translatable real-world innovations in an industry-focused environment,” noted Prof Sue Thomas, CEO of ARC.

“An important part of ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres is the opportunity they provide to early career researchers, to gain an experience in an industry setting, within a highly driven research environment.”

“This Training Centre will train up future research leaders by providing opportunities to Higher Degree by Research and postdoctoral students.”

The site has already begun work on a 3D printer that uses bioinks that can be used to regenerate medicine and create replacement bone implants.

The centre was opened by Hon Karen Andrews MP, the Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, on behalf of Hon Simon Birmingham, the Minister for Education and Training.
